What is IPL?

IPL or intense pulsed light is a technology used by cosmetic and medical practitioners to perform various skin treatments for aesthetic and therapeutic purposes, including hair removal and photo-rejuvenation. A test patch and consultation must occur 24 hours or longer prior to any IPL treatment. There is a $40 test patch fee which is redeemable upon your first treatment should you choose to go ahead with the IPL treatment. IPL is not suited for people with very pigmented skin types or Fitzpatrick skin type 6.

How Does IPL Work?

As with all light based treatments IPL works by emitting a broad spectrum wavelength of light into the skin, which when treating hair targets the pigment in the hair which causes heating until the hair and surrounding blood vessels destroyed. Various filters are used to deal with various conditions to allow safe treatment on a range of skin types.

Is it Safe?

Many cosmetic procedures can come with adverse side effects and IPL treatments do have a few minor side effects including slight redness of the skin, swelling and a sensation of soreness or sunburn, however these symptoms generally only last a day or two.  Occasionally there can me some slight pigment change, which can make the treated area either darker or lighter, though this generally occurs in darker skin tones and should fade within a few weeks.

Some medications such as some antihistamines, antidepressants, antibiotics and contraceptives, for example, are light sensitive so make sure your clinician is fully informed.

All Griffins House of Beauty staff are thoroughly trained and qualified to operate IPL machinery which all meet TGA (Therapeutic Goods Australia) approval leaving you in the best hands to safely undergo your IPL treatment.

Results

Treated hairs will fall out within 2 weeks after the treatment. During the course of your treatments you may notice you will get patches of hair, this is a normal occurrence. Around the 4th treatment you will notice a burst in hair growth, this is known as the flourish stage this means all you hair has started to grow through at the same stage and can be treated more effectively it is imperative to continue treatments after this stage following the correct treatment plan. Over a 4 – 8 week course of treatments every 4 weeks you should expect around 80% of the hair to be removed by the 6 treatment depending on the density of hair in the area being treated. Results will vary person to person. Unfortunately 100% hair removal cannot be guaranteed.

Pricing Conditions

It should be noted that the above pricing is structured on common body sizing (height/weight) or time is taken to complete any treatment area. Larger body types generally take up longer times and an increase in price may reflect this. Final pricing for treatments will be agreed to during your first free consultation and completion of a test patch. A reduced price may also be considered if the listed treatment area above is only partially covered in hair. The first test patch consultation does NOT include a treatment and you do not need to shave prior for a test patch (treatments must be done 24hour or longer after a test patch).

Will I Need Multiple Treatments

Hair growth occurs in 4 stages: early anagen (early hair growth). Anagen (active hair growth), Catagen (regression) and Telogen (not growing). Permanent hair removal only effects hair growth in the anagen stage. This means that approximately 25% of hair growth is removed with each treatment; therefore multiple treatments are required for the treatment to be effective.

How Many Treatments Are Needed?

When considering how many treatments are necessary for proper treatment of unwanted hair it is necessary to consider that everyone has varying amounts or hair, its thickness, hair and skin colour and location to be removed. Once all this has been taken into consideration, treatments required can range from 6-10 treatments.

It is also important to stick to a 4 week treatment plan as this is the period where the hair has reached the treatment phase of growth. Later on in the course of treatments this 4 week period maybe extended to 5 weeks as the hair beings to thin.

Shaving

I do offer to shave body areas excluding the genital area. I only shave in the direction of the hair growth and I use a cut throat single blade to do all shaving treatments. As shaving takes much longer the price is reflected in this.

It is preferred that pre-IPL shaving is done 12 hours or more prior to your appointment and not at the time of your IPL session. For a personalised quote on areas to be shaved contact us today.
